RE Trip - Year 5

On Thursday 20th October, our Year 5 children were fortunate to go on RE trip to the Sri Guru Singh Sabha gurdwara in Southall. The weather was not on our side as it rained relentlessly the whole day. Eagerly anticipating the events of the day, our children showed resilience and determination that day by hopping on and off buses to get to their destination despite the glum weather.

They were greeted by a beautiful structure with golden domes and the yellow flag (Nishan Sahib) which was an indication of the place of worship they were about to visit.

Before they were allowed to go inside the gurdwara, they had to obey certain rules, therefore they had to wear a patka (head covering) and remove their shoes.

Once ready, they had a tour of the gurdwara where they had a spectacular view from the top of the altar, the prayer area and the kitchen where volunteers were busy preparing the food (langar) which comprised of a rice, Indian bread and pulses. They were enthused to see how much was being prepared at the back of the gurdwara.

Once inside, the gurdwara, they were able to reflect on the beauty of the place, the canopy stood at the very front with the Guru Granth Sahib resting underneath. The hymns were being sung by some of the musicians. We were told that during the course of the day, the pitches (raggas) change accordingly.

Next, they had a talk from our guide who talked about what they had learnt in class. The talk was about the chosen, the 5R and certain rituals. Our children could not wait to get their queries answered. The talk was followed by lunch where children were so eager to try out the langar (free meal). Some who opted for the langar enjoyed the meals and could not stop talking about it. It was almost time to come back and the weather played havoc on us again. Once more, we were even more determined and come back and tell everyone about our experience. We would like to thank all parents, guardians and carers who attended the trip and supported throughout the day.
